2 Environment Ministers. Has Kev Kopped out?

November 29th 2007 23:16
: Has Kev Kopped out?
As most of you will know, Australia is now effectively the proud owner of two Ministers for the Environment.

Peter Garret has the Environment Portfolio as well as his arts comittments and Penny Wong is now the Minister for Climate Change and Water.

At first I thought this was excellent, two people means double the power, double the focus on the issues, it gives us the possibility that twice as much will get done.

Then the little voice in my head got going. Is this really a good thing or does this leave room for NOTHING to get done because they can both point the finger at each other and say it wasnt their job?

Both of them are going to Bali, what if we don't sign because of China and India, who is going to step up and say, hey that was me that did that. Will Rudd? Will Garrett? Will Wong?

Look i really hope my initial reaction was the right one, I am excited about the achievements Australia can make in this area.

I am wondering what all you out there think? Is Kev creating a wall to hide behind if they don't get anything done, or do you think this is a Genuine attempt to get twice as much done?

I think this is a genuine attempt to take as much responsibility from Garrett, while still allowing him to save face, so Rudd doesn't end up getting 'embarrassed' by any more of Garrett's 'slips'.

I don't know much about Wong... But I hope your first thought about this was right too, Louie. I hate it when politicians let politics get in the way of the job.

In the case of environmental policy, with the fads of today, such as the greenhouse global warming (manmade) hoax, incompetence can only be looked at as brilliance, ie. the less they do, the better.

Rudd needs Garrett to make his cabinet look hip... keep him onside, so they can become stripclub buddies?

When I heard about this, I also thought it was 'great' because now they're making the environment such a priority that they're enlisting two people for the job. We can only hope with this new government. I suppose we'll see soon enough - I mean, they must know that many Australians take environmental issues seriously and there'd be hell to pay if they stuff up.
