what is earth hour?
And why should you play?
Let's face it, if you haven't heard of Earth Hour you must have been hiding out on the moon or a lush tropical island somewhere. But other than turning off the lights for an hour just what do we know about earth hour? Here are some facts and la link.
Earth Hour started its life as a humble Sydney movement in 2007 run by the WWF and is now a Global movement with 24 major cities participating this Saturday night. All you have to do is turn off your lights for 60 minutes between 8 and 9pm on March 29th 2008.
At the time of writing this 252,680 people and 18,534 businesses globally had signed up to the Earth Hour movement.
What does Earth Hour hope to achieve? Earth hour is a message that says individual action on a mass scale can make a difference globally, it is a reminder to us all that every little bit we do helps. We don't all need to be heroes like Al Gore and win Nobel Peace prizes to make a difference, we just need to think about the LITTLE things because they all add up.
It remans to be seen how many people will power down over the weekend, just for an idea on the impact that one hour could have, last year in Sydney 2.2million people and 2,100 Sydney businesses participated. The WWF measured a power usage reduction of 10.2%, sustained for a year that is equivalent to taking circa 44,000 cars off the road. The Sydney event was largely symbolic but imagine what can be achieved when the whole world plays.
