what is the australian cleantech index?
The Australian Cleantech Index is an index formulated to track the performance of the fledgling Australian listed cleantech sector on the Australian Stock Exchange.
There are currently about 76 stocks in the Index, see this post for details
with a market Capitalisation of $11bn, which may sound like a lot but in the schem of things it really isn't, one day any one of the companies in the index has the potential to be worth that on its own should they get it right.
Why is the Cleantech index so important? Well it goes a bit like this, in order to develop their technologies companies need vital capital, the more aware financial markets are of each individual company, the easier it is for them to get the essential dollars. The cleantech index helps raise awareness of each of these compnaies. Australia is well behind Europe and the U.S. in developing a cleantech sector and we need to catch up or get left behind. If we get left behind then we really will be a loser in the battle towards halting climate change as technology is one of the biggest pieces of the puzzle no matter what they say.
Here's a snippet from the developers of the index website or click here to check it out
You may think this has nothing to do with you, but guess what it does. Every Australian has superannuation, if we all put pressure on Super funds to invest just a tiny fraction of our super into cleantech we could really make a difference to the Climate Change problem, a small amount of money out of our Super futures is a HUGE step in INVESTING IN OUR PLANET AND COUNTRIES FUTURE.

Cleantech Industry
The emerging Cleantech sector covers a range of growth industries that will move the concept of sustainable living from theory and aspiration to a practical reality.
Investors, project proponents and governments have the same goals of delivering successful projects that are not only profitable but also assist communities to live more sustainably. However each group uses different language and different measures to describe these goals. They may also use different indicators to measure ÃÂÃÂsuccessÃÂÃÂ.
To facilitate success for all parties, Australian CleanTech provides:
Development of policy initiatives that stimulate Cleantech investments
Introductions for investors to suitable project proponents
Introductions for project proponents to suitable investors
Effective translation to facilitate an understanding between parties that they share the same aims
Structures and mechanisms that meet the needs of all parties
Successful negotiation of the hurdles created by differing drivers
Technology and project services through a wealth of experience and extensive networks
By investing in leading and practical technology development for the home market, Australian companies can assume a global leadership role in the Cleantech sector.

I finally made it here *wiping forehead* long story, but my internet is in and out like blanket in the wind....long story and I don;t have time, least it cuts again (Grrr one word: TELSTRA aaarrgghh!) It's liek the tower of babel when they ahve to speak to other ISP providers and now we've been shunted to the bottom of the list because we 'made too much noise?' Oh PLEEEAASSE.... (moving on)....
I do not support the stock market as in my mind, it fules greed and the whole global mess we are in in the first place, however, since it exists and is a necessary evil (well until people are eating people anyway)... then I guess that money invested in 'green' companies is better than big, fat dirty hariy red ones?
Multinationals and centralised wealth?
Oh don't get me started ....

I'll pass this on to Andrew, he knows so much more about these things than I do, but it's his job, finance, after all.

this is the bigger picture, a necessary evil. that is what I am all about, if the system is there let's use it for the planet, let the green greed help the GREEN PLANET I say. I spend all my days trying to make that happen.
fingers crossed.

Im not sure that throwing good money (green) after bad (radiactive red) is the answer Louie? But then I know nothing of the stock market and why we need it. It is times like this I wish we could meet for a cuppa and you could explain it to me... can you summerise it for all the dodo heads on orble - like me - who also havent got a clue, why we need the stockmarket in a world of burgeoning population, over production and shrinking resources?
